last May 1-2 at the Marriot Hotel in Portland, Maine.
Casey Creamer spoke on "Advanced Circular Saw
Hammering Techniques." IKS presented material on "Chipper and Planer
Knives" and Gary and Jack Lockhart discussed
"Circular Saws: Flat-Straight-Square."
Other presentations on the educational program included the following:
Elmar Vaughn, "Old High-tech Filing"; Fred Oleson
& Joe Cauen, "Varipitch Bandsaws: Design, Maintenance,
Application": Dave Halstead, "Band-mill Alignment"; Peter
Lane, "Band Feeds & Speeds"; and Dave Jones,
"Band Saw Tensioning."
Banquet speaker was Maine humorist Mark Eaton.
Officers elected for 1998-99 were as follows: Lewis Jones,
President; Ed Miner, Vice-President; Gordon Locke,
Secretary -Treasurer;. The Board of Directors are: Bob Beauregard,
Bill Carey, Dave Halstead and Cecil Hikel.
California-Western
Rod Swift reports the following officers elected at the
California Western Saw Filers' Educational Association meeting in Portland, Oregon last
spring: President, Dave Varner; Secretary, Mark Howell;
Program Chairman, Larry McGrew; Raffle Chairman, Bob Ward;
Board Members, Ed Branscomb, Frank Boes, and Frank
Covington.
Southeastern
The Southeastern Saw Filers' Educational
Association held their annual meeting April 30-May 1 at the Holiday Inn-Sunspree in
Asheville, North Carolina.
Current Officers are as follows: President, Marvin Owens;
Vice-President, Pete Daughtery; Secretary, Sharon Seymour;
Treasurer, Jerry Smith; Directors are Johnny Sanders, James
Land, Bob Howe and John Slocumb.

Western
On Saturday, September 19, the Western Saw Filer's Educational
Association held its 37th annual meeting in Portland, Oregon. The conference dedicated its
educational program to the subject of curve sawing under the direction of Program Chairman
Warren Ulrich.
The keynote speaker was Ron McGehee of McGehee
Equipment with an outstanding presentation on curve sawing systems. The ensuing program
featured several presentations. Mike Neveau of Willamette Industries
spoke about his experience filing for a curve sawing edger system. Mike Cloutier
of Whatcom Saw discussed new technology in saw coolants along with their selection and
application. The final presentation featured a "hands-on" workshop on circular
saw benching with Tom Jones of Willamette Industries, Morris
Conklin of Friesen Lumber and Ron McClain of Roseburg Forest
Products. The workshop was held on site at Armstrong Manufacturing.
The closing speaker, retired saw filer and consultant Jim Reid
of Poulsbo, Washington, talked on "Saw Filing across the USA and Offshore."
Jim's presentation was highlighted by film and slides of his worldwide travels and
experiences in the pursuit of saw filing.
The evening banquet and awards festivities included the induction of
two new members into the Western Saw Filer's Hall of Fame. Honored for career achievement
and outstanding saw filing careers were Ken Gaston and Clyde
Putman.
New officers for this year were elected as follows: President, Warren
Ulrich; Vice President/Program Chairman, Randy Richardson;
Secretary/Treasurer, Bill Saily; Publicity Director, Clark
Williams; Nominations Chairman/Sergeant at Arms, Ron McClain;
Directors, Charlie Brown, Jerry Yarber, Tom
Jones and Virgil Kivett.
The conference dates for 1999 for the Western Saw Filer's Educational
Association will be September 17th and 18th to be held at the Double Tree Hotel, Lloyd
Center, in Portland, Oregon.
Lake Erie & Ontario
Officers serving the Lake Erie and Ontario Saw Filers for
this year are as follows: Bruce Moore, President; Jeff List,
Vice-President; Ed Chapman, Secretary/Treasurer/Librarian; Paula
Peters, Newsletter Editor. Directors are: Tim Rauber, Ken
Kasprzyk, Bill Whyland, Dave Copeland, Garth
Nash, Casey Creamer, Ed Bolt, Bob Barr,
Joe Shortino and Dave Born.
