IP Filing Rooms Include JM-2000 Tippers

When International Paper upgraded their filing rooms, they chose the JM-2000 Automatic Plasma Tipper and Annealer for their alloy tipping needs. IP's expansion at Meldrim, Georgia, also included a JM-5500 Tooth Geometry Inspector

IP at Tuscaloosa, Alabama, already had a JM-2100 Stand Alone Annealer. They filed out their filing room by adding the JM-2000 Tipper, the JM-3000 Dual Side Grinder and the JM-5500 Tooth Geometry Inspector. Both IP mills are alloy tipping circle saws for their curved sawing gangs and using the JM-5500 Tooth Geometry inspector to closely monitor their kerfs, angles and side clearances.

Mills across the country are finding that the JM-2000 is the machine of choice for their tipping needs. It offers significant savings in both time and alloy. Very little tooth preparation is needed prior to tipping. Unlike resistance weld tippers which grind away expensive alloy in the retipping process, the JM-2000 melts the old tip and adds new alloy only as needed. In addition, the new tip is formed by chill molds which closely match the tooth configuration, so there is less to grind away, saving time and materials.

The heavy-duty modular construction offers long life and easy maintenance. Because it is designed and built in the U.S.A., replacement parts are readily available.

The JM-2000 is user friendly. Its fully automatic "walk-away" operation frees filing room personnel during operation.

Jacobsen Service Technician Kris Pelan was very busy at the IP Tuscaloosa installation because he was also installing new grinders at Mid South Lumber in Meridan, Mississippi.

Mid South selected the JM-3000 Automatic Dual Side Grinder and the JM-1000 Automatic Top and Face Grinder for their new filing room. Jacobsen grinders are fully hydraulic and feature solid heavy-duty construction that is built to last.

Pelan also made good use of time while installing the JM-2000 at Meldrim by giving Battle Lumber at Wadley, Georgia, a follow-up training session on their JM-2000 Tipper and Annealer.

Pacific/Hoe Knife Production Goes 24-7 to Fill Demand

Pacific/Hoe is now in the process of expanding knife production in response to their dramatic increase in knife sales over the past year, according to company President, George Jacobsen. In addition to training new personnel, the company is purchasing an additional large surface grinder and new CNC milling machines for their Portland, Oregon, plant.

Jacobsen has seen increased demand for chipper, planer and eased edge / mill-to-pattern knives.

"Our continuous Commitment to Quality has paid off in our knife department," says Jacobsen.

"Our quality is the highest in the industry and our competitive pricing makes it the clear choice for value. Through a high level of production efficiency, we can compete with any imported knife."

"Customers who had chased low prices have returned for the quality and exceptional customer service. It really does come back."

"Everyday we read about industry leaving the U.S. for foreign soil. It is exciting to be expanding our manufacturing capability here in the U.S.A.," says Jacobsen.

Lightweight Aluminum Guides Offer Advantages

Mills are discovering the advantages of aluminum guide arms. Today high quality aluminum and high tech anodizing allows a wider range of applications than every before, according to Bob Bradstreet, Plant Manager at Pacific/Hoe's Portland Oregon manufacturing facility.

Longview Fiber in Leavenworth, Washington, and Linden Lumber in Alabama are two mills who have turned to aluminum guides to solve some former problems.

Aluminum's lighter weight makes changing guide arms in the mill easier and safer. The aluminum arms weigh 75% less than their steel counterparts. This is especially important on larger gangs.

In addition, aluminum guides are not subject to rust or corrosion, maintaining cleanliness of the guides and insuring accuracy and tolerances between guides when clamped together.

"We've had great success," says Bradstreet. "We are able to hold the same tight .0005" tolerances as we do in steel."

Pacific/Hoe uses only high tensile aircraft aluminum and produces guides on the latest CNC equipment to hold tolerances.

Many mills color-code guide arms to distinguish different cuts for quick changes. Aluminum guides can be anodized in permanent colors to your specifications.

Huey Long Comes Out of Retirement

Internationally recognized guide expert Huey Long supervises engineering at the Portland plant.

He recommends installing inserts for the screw-on babbitt pads. "When you install steel inserts, you will not strip the aluminum," he advises. Long worked closely with Ivan Allday at Linden Lumber to insure a successful installation.

Long had retired from Pacific/Hoe in 1999 after nearly 40 years with the company. He was later persuaded to return to mange Pacific/Hoe's Guide Products Department.

Long was inducted into the Western Saw Filers' Educational Association Hall of Fame at their Annual Meeting in September, 2000. He is available to help customers with installations and engineering services.

International Paper and Weyerhaeuser Purchase JM-5500 Tooth Geometry Inspector.

International Paper and Weyerhaeuser are two companies who have installed Jacobsen's popular JM-5500 Tooth Geometry Inspector. It is an affordable high-resolution inspection tool for both circle and band tooth geometry which quickly verifies accurate grinder set-ups.

"Customers are also finding that the JM-5500 is a valuable tool for grinder trouble shooting," says Dave Macey of Jacobsen Manufacturing Co.

The JM-5500 features a high-resolution camera and monitor to give the operator a magnified visual image of kerf and side clearance as well as radial and tangential angles. This allows everyone in the filing room to easily see the same clear information.

The JM-5500 can identify a grinder bearing starting to go, a slide alignment problem, or a wear issue. Head and spindle alignments and standard grinder set-ups are viewed easily and clearly.

The JM-5500 takes the guesswork out of grinder maintenance and speeds filing room trouble shooting. Call 1-800-547-5537 for more information.

Alloy Rod vs. Solid Wire

More and more users of the JM-2000 Plasma Tipper are converting to solid rod on their circle tipping applications. Jacobsen's pre-ground solid Alloy Rod is precision ground to .093 diameter and comes in 72" standard lengths (part number 20J-ROD093). Currently, Solid Rod is approximately half the price of wire, offering substantial savings to your per tip costs. Solid rod is the ideal solution to circle tipping applications.

Jacobsen Alloy Rod, used in conjunction with the JM-2500 Rod Electrode Dresser, completely eliminates short ends and allows you to utilize the complete rod.

The JM-2500 allows the user to re-weld shorts back into a usable rod length to take full advantage of the per-tip savings of Jacobsen's pre-ground Alloy Rod. Simply use the Oxy-Acetylene torch and the JM-2500 Jig to re-weld the shorts. After welding the joint, slide the weld over the dresser and rotate until the weld diameter matches the original rod diameter fore easy feeding on the JM-2000 Tipper Rod Feed. Call 1-800-547-5537 for additional information on the JM-2500 and Jacobsen Alloy Rod.

Jacobsen Manufacturing Issued New Patent

Jacobsen Manufacturing Co. has been issued an additional new U.S. Patent on its unique Roll Technology for the JM-6000 Automatic Circle Saw Leveler. Patents RE-36,409 and RE 37-833 are now labeled on all JM-6000 machines

These patents cover the single roll-set technology that allows the JM-6000 to hammer both directions from the same position.

The JM-6000 now also comes complete with the "quick change" plate thickness adjuster which allows the operator to change plate thickness adjustments in seconds.

Along with the new "ridge program" and "full pass option" the JM-6000 is a must tool for any filing room maintaining curve sawing gang saws. Call 1-800-547-5537 for more information.

Pacific/Hoe Installs Jacobsen 3-D Scanner

Jacobsen Manufacturing has just installed a new 3-D Scanning station at the Pacific/Hoe circle saw plant. The 3-D Scanner was designed using an optical laser input to scan circles and output a topographical image of the blade. This technology allows Pacific/Hoe's anvil men and inspectors to view circle flatness tolerances on a monitor. Tolerances can be set to .0001" increments.

Rich Olney, Pacific/Hoe's Circle Saw Department Manger, uses this tool to constantly monitor heat treat to insure black plates are meeting his stringent flatness standards and again on bright plates as a final inspection tool.

The Jacobsen 3-D Scanner is another state -of-the-art tool Pacific/Hoe uses to maintain strict quality standards in its Circle Department.,
